History of Amino Acids:

The first Amino Acids were produced probably on earth more than 3 X 109 years ago via “ prebiotic synthesis” in the primordial atmosphere. The concept of primordial synthesis is based on lab experiments in which glycine, alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid & other compounds were produced by action of an electric discharge on a stimulated primordial atmosphere consisting of methane, hydrogen, water & ammonia. Since then traces of Amino Acids have been detected on moon rocks, meteorites, interstellar space.
In modern history of Amino Acid Chemistry began in 1806 when two French investigators / scientist isolated aspargine from asparagus juice.

Production Methods:

There are three processes suitable for production of Amino Acids.
  • Extraction: In the extraction process, the natural Amino Acids are isolated from Protein Sources i.e. Animal Source & Vegetable Source.
  • Synthetic Process: Synthetic Amino Acids generally are racemix mixtures; in some cases production of L-Amino Acids are possible from prochiral precursors, so called asymmetric synthesis.
  • Fermentation or Enzymatic Catalysis: Fermentation & enzymatic catalysis utilize whole cells (bacteria, yeast) & active cell components (enzymes) respectively.
