Information on Cuprous Bromide

Cuprous Bromide is a derivative of Bromine. It is a colorless to pale green colored powder with a melting point of 402∘C. It is sensitive to light and air and should be stored in tightly closed containers at room temperature.

Synthesis / Manufacturing Process of Bromides

The major raw material for all Bromides is Elemental Bromine. Bromine was first discovered in 1826. It occurs in the form of Bromides in seawater and natural brine deposits. Bromine brines are treated with Chlorine gas in the presence of Air. During this process, the Bromide anions are oxidized to Bromine gas by the Chlorine gas. Bromine is further reacted with either Sulphur or Phosphorous and water to give Hydrobromic Acid, which is the intermediate product in the manufacturing of various Bromides. Cuprous Bromide is manufactured by treating Copper Sulphate with Hydrobromic Acid in the presence of Sodium Bisulphate.
